| I've
been wondering on this subject for quite a long time, what a designer
should do: start a company or form a collective?
This is in fact more about logic than anything else. Being a
designer on our own means that sometimes we will have assignments
and sometimes not. When we are making money we must have in mind
the times when we might not, so... We cannot afford regular bills
like studio/place, electricity, water, etc. At least if you are
on your own and your parents cannot afford your designer's life.
So, if you have recently dropped out a steady job where you were
explored (you were, period) you will have your mind set to do
better than your boss did. But the tricky part is that starting
a design “company” you will do to others, sooner or
later, what your former boss did to you, explore your creative
talent to the bone in order to create more lucrative “income”.
The issue here is that I personally stand against capitalization
of the individual, even more if it's about creative talent. So
why having a plan to do that to others?
Rather than creating a company, far more interesting is to unite
with creative talents from other areas than design. Imagine a
copywriter, an illustrator, a graphic designer and a web designer,
even odder, a programmer, all splitting expenses and bucks and
making what matters the most, quality work for the client. Profit
must be considered as a mean to subsist doing what you love to
do, which is what matters the most, do whatever we love to do
and getting paid in the process. That is a goal everyone should
aim.
Examples for creative top collectives are Brazilian artists,
illustrators and graphic designers, working together and breeding
fun and quality to everybody. One can sense different approaches
from the individuals talent and mixed to obtain higher ground.
So, you have brains, use them. Write on a Moleskine your aims
and goals, a manifest and explain your ideas to a group you admire
and you want to work with and work.
